• About  ME

I'm Shanna - passionate about international education, especially the facilitation of positive international experiences and increasing internationalization efforts through effective management and advocacy.

I'm a Scholar-Practitioner meaning that I make administrative decisions based on supporting evidence from research. By examining international education insights and trends from all across the world, I can make localized decisions while maintaining awareness of the wider global picture.

    Why is this important?

Over 4 million students participate in international education experiences annually (OECD, 2015). International education experiences include studying, working, and volunteering in another country as well as participating in other types of meaningful travel experiences.

In 2014/15, nearly 1 million international students studied at U.S. colleges and universities - representing nearly 5% of all enrollments in the USA and over 20% of all international students globally (IIE, 2015 & U.S. Department of Education, 2015).

Comparatively, outbound participation from the USA is relatively low. The latest data shows that over 300,000 U.S. students studied abroad in 2013/14 - more than triple the number from 25 years ago, yet still representing less than 2% of all enrollments (ibid).

Facilitating positive international education experiences is imperative for helping people from different cultures connect in a meaningful way. Research conducted by NAFSA (2012) indicates: Americans are largely united in the belief that international education is vitally important to our economy and the success of today's young people in navigating a competitive global workplace. This ideological / educational philosophy is shared by other countries as well.

How can I make a difference?

I've worked over the past decade to better familiarize myself with international affairs and cross-cultural communication.

I've personally lived, worked, and studied in three different countries - the USA, Austria, and England. I've also traveled throughout North America, Western Europe, and even out to Australia. Speaking German, French, and Spanish (in addition to my native English) has helped me immensely - in growing as a professional, an academic, and as a global citizen working to help diverse populations.
